This game seemed so advanced to me back when I first played it. It was like a glimpse into a possible future for games. A future of 3d sandbox shooters and huge non-linear rpgs.

GOOD RETRO GAME WEEK SPECIAL, day 1!

For one week only, I'm playing 12 games I used to love. But it's possible/likely that these games won't quite live up to my hazy childhood memories. Will any of them still hold up today?

Well I might as well start at the beginning. This was perhaps the first game I ever played, and it was ancient even then.

Hellfire Zone (MS-DOS)

Helicopters, explosions, tanks. Seems good so far.

Doraemon: Nobita no Dorabian Night (TurboGrafx-16)

Seems like we're going to be visiting ancient Persia. Wow, what is up with that guy's eyes?

Star Wars Arcade (32X)

Another 32X 3d space game! It's actually making a decent attempt at playing the theme music here.

Star Wars (ZX Spectrum)

That's not a bad title screen at all for a ZX Spectrum game I think. Though the Death Star in the background looks more like a giant sinister R2D2 to me.

Spider-Man: The Animated Series (SNES)

Part one:

Out of all the SNES games I've been playing, that's possibly the best title screen I've seen yet. Spider-Man swings around in the background, then drops down, and climbs back up to pose for the camera.

Surprise! It's Stellar Assault again, only this time on the Sega Saturn. Lets see how it compares.

Oh wow, it's a Bullfrog game. That's probably a good sign. Probably.

Batman (ZX Spectrum)

It took five minutes to load this, so I hope you appreciate the incredible sacrifices I make.

I have no idea why Batman is carrying a shield though. We're supposed to be collecting pieces of the broken Batmobile, so I suppose it could be a hubcap.

Star Trek: The Next Generation: Klingon Honor Guard (PC)

More Star Trek? Everybody loves Star Trek, right?

Of all the shiny gold titles I've seen so far, that's probably one of the best.

OK here we go! I wasn't sure what kind of game it was but I really don't tend to look up much about it before I play.

This definitely seems like something I should have heard of. Well I vaguely remember the name, but I've got no idea what type of game it is or if it's supposed to be any good.

The Blues Brothers: Jukebox Adventure (MS-DOS)

What the hell reason do they have to be so happy? I've never seen any of the Saturday Night Live sketches, but I don't remember them smiling much in the movie.

Tuff E Nuff (SNES)

I'm guessing either a side scrolling beat 'em up or a platformer about a woodland creature with attitude. In the forest.

Alien Trilogy (MS-DOS)

I think this one's a first person shooter. Or maybe I'm confusing it with Alien vs Predator on the Jaguar.

Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu (TurboGrafx-16)

Not to be confused with Jackie Chan's Inaction Kung Fu, where he just sits watching martial arts movies for the whole game.

This was actually one of my favourite platformers on the NES, so I'm curious to see if it's the same game.

Metal Rage (MS-DOS)

Wandering contributor mecha-neko stops by to show off a tank game he's found.

That does say 'Metal Rage'. You'll have to take my word for it.

Adventures of Lolo (NES)

Hey it's by HAL, the Kirby and Smash Bros developers. Maybe this one won't be so bad.

Valdis Story (PC)

Ocean returns with a look at another free rpg.

Valdis Story was something I was asked to play. As I was playing Indie RPGs, I figured why not? It's more a platformer than an RPG really but it does have levelling... I guess that's about it from what I got to play. You can download it here.

Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts publicly humiliated me, now I'm going after the first game in the series for revenge.

This is the first Commodore 64 game I've ever played by the way, so I'm not sure what to expect from it.

Yeah I have played this before, a while ago now, but I haven't seriously played it. I walked a couple of screens, got killed by monsters, and turned it off.

The Spirit Engine II (PC)

RPG expert Ocean is back with another freeware game, which you can download for yourself here.

The Spirit Engine 2. By the name I thought it'd be some type of train game or a new game making engine or something. But it's a side scrolling RPG, without platforming parts.


You can change the difficulty and also even change it midgame if you want, but you can disable that too if you don't like that.

Nightbreed: The Action Game (ZX Spectrum)

To be honest I only loaded this up to see the title screen. I should probably turn it off now.
