Soleil / Crusader of Centy (Genesis/Mega Drive)

ATTENTION: THIS ARTICLE HAS BEEN RECLASSIFIED AS BEING 'A BIT CRAP'.
You can find my second look at the game here instead: Soleil (Genesis/Mega Drive) - Replay.

This looks potentially interesting. They've helpfully written the title in text in case you can't decipher the logo.

Oh no.

No no no.

Wait, it's the law of the land that 14 year olds are given a sword and sent out to fight?

You just told me to go to battle!

Fine. Pressing the buttons on everything does nothing. Talking to everyone doesn't seem to work. I guess you just have to wait for the birthday party to end. Yay.

Man I hate this game.

I'm out! And the music's just as annoying cutesy out here too. I wasn't paying attention to what I was supposed to do, but I'm guessing I'm probably going to go see the king! Or rescue a princess. Maybe both.

Hmm. Unlikely to be the king or a princess, although you never know.

Well I fell down a hole, but it didn't lead to adventure.

The world map! And I didn't even have to go speak to the damn village elder, meet the king, or do a pointless little quest or anything.

Son of a bitch....

LATER.

Okay, I've found enemies! I found the enemies, so I am officially through with this game. Final rating: painful. Though it's admittedly pretty well made, it's definitely the most Zeldary Zelda clone I've played in a while.

I beg for release from this game!

  1. *shrugs* The Genesis had like one, two good action RPG/adventure games. This is one.

  2. A-ha, found it! This, or Soleil as I knew it, is probably my most favourite pre-current gen game. It definitely gets a lot better. The pets you collect (like your dog at the very start) let your weapon do more things: fly round corners, adds elemental spells, etc.

First game that I recall ever finishing*, and definitely the first that moved me emotionally. There's a chapter where you end up disguised as a monster you've just killed and there's a massive kick in the feels. The end is triumphant too.

If you can stomach those first couple of levels again, I'd urge you to give it a go.

Thanks for pointing me towards the review from twitter! Love the blog, always have. x

(*Come to think of it, that may have been Mickey & Donald's World of Illusion)

    1. Yeah, I'll definitely add it to my 'games to replay' list, because it has to deserve more than just 10 pictures and a bit of whining.

Also World of Illusion, there's another one I should probably check out at some point.

  3. This game is like the SNES Zelda...

...but Centy is actually fun. And it's prettier.
