Megatexturing used enormous multi-gigabyte textures that covered the entire map instead of traditional texture tiles. As a result the game looks like a hand-drawn painting from a distance but it's really rough up-close.

Supposedly Id could have made it look nicer if the megatextures had been saved at a higher resolution, but the publisher insisted that the game fit on two DVDs to keep costs down. According to Steam my installation of the game is 23gb, which is huge for something that came out in 2011.

If you ignore the textures the levels are just square boxes and ramps, with boxy tables and chairs and non-animated computer screens. It's the opposite of Doom 3 - huge wide-open environments with very little detail. It runs at 60fps easily but the streaming textures often take a split-second to draw on the screen, even with a modern PC with an SSD. The car racing isn't elaborate enough to be interesting but you have to participate in order to advance the plot.

It's frustrating because most of the individual elements are okay, and the Scorchers DLC mission pack feels like a distant ancestor of Doom (2016), but it's a huge missed opportunity. From what I remember you can't reload while sprinting, so a lot of the gameplay involves running backwards in figures-of-eight while shooting people, and as you point out the storyline starts to get interesting and then just stops.

It feels as if Id made an engine that would be terrific for a Modern Warfare or Call of Duty-style game - attractive from a distance but largely non-interactive - but they wanted to show off the engine's versatility by adding a perfunctory open-world driving sim plus some decent but very short shooting levels. It's interesting to compare it with Half-Life 2, which was also an engine showcase but had far better gameplay.Ashley Pomeroyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09466311744358782337noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2068112306642079190.post-13776984466081593642014-06-07T23:40:07.792+01:002014-06-07T23:40:07.792+01:00Great review, screenshots and many aspects of this...Great review, screenshots and many aspects of this game (like the giant mutant, etc) remind me a lot of Fallout 3 and New Vegas (also this game was published by Bethesda!)Robhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01726378762009685237noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2068112306642079190.post-83359088541515677402014-01-21T04:18:06.643+00:002014-01-21T04:18:06.643+00:00Sure, I can do that.
