Commander Keen 4: Secret of the Oracle (MS-DOS)

The poor kid looks like he's been dropped on his head a few too many times. To be honest I was expecting Commander Keen to be somewhere between Duke Nukem and Buck Rogers, not a pale guy in a crash helmet and magenta t-shirt.

Final Fantasy (NES) - Guest Post

Final Fantasy specialist Ocean returns, again, this time to show off the very first of the Final Fantasy series, on the NES.

I wrote about Final Fantasy IV (aka Final Fantasy II) last week, but I figured, hey why not at least play another one? Here you go, my first RPG ever. Probably my first game ever too. My introduction to the world of videogaming.

This is Final Fantasy's original NES title screen, but you won't find it at the start of the game. You have to play all the way up to unlocking the second town before they let you see it.

Killzone (PS2) - Guest Post

I've played Halo already. It's time for the PS2's triumphant Halo-beater: Red Faction.

No, wait, it's Killzone. Bugger.

But first, an apology.

Gunstar Heroes (Genesis/Mega Drive)

Okay, that's a good title screen. I especially like the way the logo spins onto the screen.

I guess the guy in the coat with the 'Guile' haircut is one of the Gunstar Heroes then?

Final Fantasy IV (SNES) - Guest Post

Final Fantasy specialist Ocean returns to take a look at Final Fantasy II, which is actually the fourth game in the main series, but the second released outside Japan, and the first on the Super Nintendo. To avoid confusion I've labelled the post Final Fantasy IV, which is what the game's known by these days.

Nostalgia hit me so I had to do this one.

Final Fantasy 4! Released in the US as 2, which is the version I'll be playing.

Terranigma (SNES)

This will be the last requested game I play for a while.

In fact it'll be the last game from me at all this week. From this point on I'll be switching from playing a game a day, to putting a new game post up every week or so, in order to give myself less work to do save people from having to read so much! But for now here's a million pictures from another Super Nintendo rpg.

Shadowrun (SNES) - Guest Post

A mysterious new guest poster called Kraed has appeared to temporarily hijack my site. But in a good way.

Ray Hardgrit is overworked and not managing to keep up with his schedule of posting games so I am posting for him. Hooray! What a lovely person I am. Here’s a game about running in the dark or something.

Weird Dreams (Amiga) - Guest Post

Hello again!

How are we supposed to know how super weird these dreams are if you don't show us!

J.R.R Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings - Volume One (SNES)

Yeah, it's another Lord of the Rings game already. I'm sorry, it was a request.

Wait... why am I apologising to you? I'm the one who has to play it! Okay I have to admit I am curious to see what it's like.

Eragon (GBA)

This came out for a few systems but I'm only playing the GBA version. And only because someone asked nicely.

Thursday 9 February 2012

EarthBound (SNES)

Another game request.

I haven't played this before exactly, but I have an idea of what to expect and... well, I can't promise this post's going to have a happy ending. Just giving you fair warning.

Wednesday 8 February 2012

Citadel (BBC Micro)

Superman vs the castle of evil monks? This game was a request, so... don't blame me.

This is my first BBC Micro game, and apparently it was actually one of the better games on the system. It's even got speech on the title screen!

Fortune Summoners (Demo) (PC) - Guest Post

Few men would have the courage and strength of will to play a game with that title screen. Fortunately RPG specialist Ocean is making a guest appearance to play it instead of me.

So I was told that Fortune Summoners came out on Steam recently as a demo. I've played Recettear and Chantelise brought over by the same translation team before, so I figured I'd give this a try!

Monday 6 February 2012

Burger Man (Amiga)

Another game request. I'm going to guess it's either a platformer or a puzzle game, and I have to get this cheeseburger out of the restaurant, through a forest level, and then to safety! At some kind of burger sanctuary perhaps, I dunno. Maybe he's even got a Burger Woman to rescue along the way.

In any case, I think it'd would be best for everyone to get this thing away from humanity. He doesn't look healthy at all. Plus he's been on the floor.

Super Ghouls'N Ghosts (SNES) - Replay

Super Adventures in Gaming Replay - Game 7

It's been nine months since I last played this game, if you can even call what I did 'playing'. I mostly just wandered into zombies. I doubt I even made it more than four screens into the first level.

But that was then.

I've played a lot of platformers since then. Games like Super Meat Boy, the Castlevania games, Ninja Gaiden, Shadow of the Beast... I must have gotten at least a little better at the damn things by now surely?

So okay Super Ghouls'n Ghosts, I'm ready for a rematch.

Saturday 4 February 2012

Soccer Kid / The Adventures of Kid Kleets (Amiga)

Super Adventures in Gaming Replay - Game 6

Aka The Adventures of Kid Kleets in the US... but only for the Super Nintendo release as far as I know. This was originally an Amiga platformer, but eventually got ported to most of the early 90s consoles.

I wrote about the game once already, but I seems that I forgot to say anything about how it plays or what it even is, so I'm giving it another look.

Probotector II - Return of the Evil Forces (NES)

Super Adventures in Gaming Replay - Game 5

I wrote about the Amiga version of Super Contra (aka Super C) just over a year ago, and besides pointing out that it looked a bit shit, I really didn't say much of anything about it. But I know a Contra fan who was... unhappy with my post. After all it's a critically acclaimed and well respected title, I should at least explain why I didn't like it.

But just for a change I'm going to play the NES port instead. The European version in fact, where everyone is a robot.

Return of the Evil Forces™... oh no, not those bastards again! That's not the Robocop font by the way, I checked.

But is that a doughnut next to the '1 Player' option?

Beyond Oasis / The Story of Thor (Genesis/Mega Drive) - Replay

Super Adventures in Gaming Replay - Game 4

Beyond Oasis, aka The Story of Thor. I last played this almost exactly a year ago, and I still think that the title screen looks like it's from a Windows 3.1 game.

It's not often that I see the game's composer get the star credit on a title screen, but Yuzo Koshiro also runs the company that developed the game, so I suppose he can put what he likes on his title screens.

Atomic Runner Chelnov - Nuclear Man, the Fighter (Arcade)

Super Adventures in Gaming Replay - Game 3

Today I’m playing the original arcade version of Genesis/Mega Drive game Atomic Runner, which I wrote about exactly one year ago today.

That title screen is very different to the one on the Mega Drive port, which had the hero standing in a city firing lightning from his hands. I’m going to make a wild guess and say the game might possibly have something to do with the Cold War in some way.
