DecapAttack (Genesis/Mega Drive)

Uh, why does he have eyes in his chest when he's clearly got a head? Also, why does he have eyes in his chest?

This is actually the western version of a Japanese game called 'Magical Hat Flying Turbo Adventure'. Seriously. It was originally based on an anime called 'Magical Hat', but all references were removed for the western release, and the hero was replaced with a decapitated mummy.

Demon's Crest (SNES) - Guest Post

GreatOldOne shows some screenshots of the start to the second sequel to classic Game Boy game 'Gargoyle's Quest'!

This is a spinoff of the incredibly awesome Ghosts 'N Goblins series starring one of the classic enemies from the series, a Red Arremer, the annoying flying red demons who love to swoop down and murder you as you struggle to do ANYTHING to them.

Wolverine: Adamantium Rage (Genesis/Mega Drive)

Wolverine's back, this time on the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, and he's still pissed off about adamantium. Not to be confused with the SNES game of the same name.

I hate it when companies develop different games for different systems but give them the same name, it's just confusing. It'd be forgiveable if they were based on a movie or whatever like the Batman 1989 games, but they're not, so I don't forgive them.

Wolverine: Adamantium Rage (SNES)

This is apparently only the second of the Wolverine games. Which surprised me because he's a popular character, though I suppose he turns up in all the X-Men games too.

Tuesday 25 October 2011

Wolverine (NES)

This is Wolverine's first ever starring role in a video game, though he's been in a few crap X-Men games before this, including Uncanny X-Men on the NES.

Vampire Hunter D (PSX)

I don't know much about Vampire Hunter D, except that it's possibly based on an anime. Also, it probably involves some degree of vampire hunting.

Wheel of Fortune: Deluxe Edition (SNES)

I may have seen this on tv once or twice when I was very young, but I can't remember anything about it. I'm sure I'll figure it out as I go though.

Threads of Fate (PSX) - Guest Post

The Super AiG project's senior jrpg expert, Ocean, has prepared an report on Threads of Fate, known in Japan as... DewPrism.
I've been meaning to play this game for 11 years. I didn't own a PlayStation back then though so I wasn't able to play it until now. Time to dive in and see if I enjoy it as much as I thought I would!

Daffy Duck in Hollywood (Master System)

It's got the genuine Looney Tunes music! And also bubbles on the logo for some reason. I left this on for a while to see if an intro appeared, but all that happens is Daffy's Oscar gets taken away and he's left miserable.

Freedom Force (PC)

I've owned this one for years, but I can't remember why I stopped playing it, or much of anything about it in fact. Maybe I'll be able to appreciate it more this time around.

Koumajou Densetsu: Scarlet Symphony (PC) - Guest Post

If anyone's missing the old school Castlevania platformers, GreatOldOne has apparently discovered the next best thing.

Koumajo Densetsu. Also known as 'Touhouvania' in certain circles, this is a game featuring characters from the Touhou Project (a series of indie vertical scrolling shooting games) with gameplay modelled after the popular Castlevania series. Despite being a Japanese indie game, it actually comes with English and French language options, which is pretty nice, although the translation is... lacking.

X-Men II: The Fall of the Mutants (MS-DOS)

A sinister looking loaf of bread warms his hand against the radioactive X-Men II logo.

This is the third ever X-Men game to be released, but the second to be developed by Paragon Software, so that's why it gets to be called X-Men 2 I presume.

Gloom Deluxe and Gloom 3: "Ultimate Gloom" Zombie Edition (Amiga) - Guest Post

Poor mecha-neko has apparently lost his long battle with insanity, after finally taking one too many crappy video games to the head. He claims he's receiving messages from the internet telling him to play more first person shooters on the Amiga, and worse he's actually playing them.

The SAIG postbag has been inundated with folks saying that I had Gloom on the wrong settings, played the wrong Gloom or that I didn't play it long enough. You only ever get the opportunity to steal top billing from Deus Ex once, so it's time for an amazing Gloom special!

This is the third game, Gloom 3... except it's really the fourth game. And there's another one after it, but that one isn't really Gloom and neither were the two in between Gloom and this one. And there's no version of this one that isn't a 'Zombie Edition'. And it's also called Ultimate Gloom.

And we're not playing this one first.

Deus Ex (PC)

At last, Super Adventures in Gaming reaches 500 posts! That doesn't necessarily mean 500 games played, and 89 of those posts weren't even written by me, but whatever, I'm going to celebrate anyway. Usually I stick to games I haven't seen before, but this time I'm replaying one of my favourite games.

I'm going to be playing it with the Direct3D 10 renderer found here: http://kentie.net/article/d3d10drv/ but I'll leave the lighting and textures alone. Click the pictures to see them at a higher resolution.

You know, I've always loved the Deus Ex theme. Plus I like how the logo forms a D, E and X at the same time, even as it spins around.

X-Men (C64)

X-Men: Madness in Murderworld... sounds like a nice place. Oh crap, it's playing clown music. That's never a good sign.

This is the second ever X-Men game, coming after Uncanny X-Men on the NES. And I really hope it's an improvement because Uncanny was pretty bad.

Tuesday 11 October 2011

The Uncanny X-Men (NES)

Today I'm going to check out the very first X-Men game, Uncanny X-Men! Or 'Marvel's X-Men' if you're going to believe the title screen over what's written on the box.

Arnie 2 (MS-DOS) - Guest Post

The jury's still out as to whether the game is really called Arnie 2: Mission Select.

Castlevania Legends (GB)

Castlevania Legends, the final Castlevania released on the original Game Boy, tells the story of the first Belmont to defeat Dracula. Or at least it would have, except that it's been declared non-canon, and no longer part of the official chronology.

It's nice to know that if I fuck up, I won't be ruining the timeline or anything. The Castlevania universe will be safe from my ineptitude for once.

Final Fantasy Adventure (GB) - Guest Post

Suddenly, jrpg expert Ocean appears from out of nowhere with a look at another classic Square game: Final Fantasy Adventure, aka Mystic Quest or Seiken Densetsu.

Despite the name, Final Fantasy Adventure is the actually the first game in the Mana series. I figured it'd be a better idea to go over this one first before playing the remake, Sword of Mana.

Here is Final Fantasy Adventure then! I have to say, this is one of the games I've probably replayed the most.

Ninja Gaiden (NES)

Guest poster ZXLink has already written a lot about the sequel Ninja Gaiden II for Super Adventures, but this is my first look at any of the original 2D Ninja Gaiden games.

Weirdly the game isn't even called Ninja Gaiden in Japan, it's called Ninja Ryūkenden (Legend of the Ninja Dragon Sword). Maybe when they brought it over they liked the idea of a Japanese sounding title, but wanted something catchier that English speaking gamers could remember.

On the other hand Europe got stuck with the name Shadow Warriors, which is just boring.
